Tips for helping your child with reading at home

reading at home

Most parents believe that learning to read is not a natural process that happens all on its own, making them apprehensive about their child’s growth in reading more than any other school subjects. For students to achieve excellence in other subjects, reading skills must be developed. Learners should not struggle with word identification when, on the other hand, they should be reading quickly. Reading is one of the essential basics a child needs to excel in school. Parents play a significant role in helping their children develop an interest in reading by encouraging their reading skills growth. The task is a multifaceted process, but the steps taken to build these skills are quite simple and straightforward.

Tips To Help Children in Reading At Home

To guide kids on how to read and make it a constructive and worthwhile experience, try these simple tips below:

  1. Read, read, read!

Balance is the key. Parents should read to their kids, teaching them how to enunciate, the tone of reading, the expressions, etc. However, parents need to ensure that it’s not only them doing all the homework but also the child. Make sure there is a balance between reading to your child and having them read aloud to you! This helps develop a sense of confidence in the child to attempt reading in the future.

  2. Gently correct them

Children are bound to make mistakes, and some may even take time to understand and get it right. As parents, you will need a lot of patience when teaching your child how to read. Sometimes it may even get a bit taxing, but when your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, you need to gently point out the letters the child has overlooked or misread. Have kids go back and reread the sentence. If the kids do not have a good time reading with you, they may not enjoy the whole experience of reading.

  3. Dig deeper into the story

Most kids have a short awareness and attention span, so this is a tip to keep your child engrossed in reading. Kids have quite imaginative brains, so developing a book your reading into something that your kids enjoy will keep them engaged and entertained. Infrequently pause and ask your child questions about the characters or events.

  4. Create a writing toolbox!

One combination that goes well with reading is writing. As you are trying to teach your child how to read, you can also engage them in writing by having some fun activities and reading, and this will help develop curiosity in the child. You could fill a box with drawing and writing materials. Find opportunities for your child to write, such as shopping lists, thank you notes or birthday cards, lunch notes, friend notes, etc.

  5. Get creative with crafts.

Kids respond to hands-on learning. Parents should try making a collage of items that start with the same sound or use sock puppets that match words that begin with a particular sound. Parents can also ask their children to draw what they understand about the story they just read. Let your child have fun feeding his puppet different objects that start with that sound.

  6. Praise, Praise, Praise!

Children need validation for what they put effort into. Appreciation is a confidence booster not only for kids but for adults as well. Parents need to praise and appreciate their children not just for correct responses but for your child’s effort as well. Parents need to encourage their children to take a risk and understand that it is okay to make an error. Most importantly, avoid criticism or comparison to other children.
